“Where are Milo and Vincent?” Kylian asked River when he got into the car later that evening. River had parked out back so nosy students wouldn’t recognize him.

“They’ve gone ahead to reserve a table,” River answered.

Kylian latched his seatbelt, and River drove away from the curb. “Do they know about us?”

“Who?” River asked.

“Milo and Vincent.”

“Yes, I think so.”

“Aren’t you afraid they’ll expose us?”

River shook his head. “No. They’ll only expose themselves.”

“So, they really are dating, and it’s not just my imagination?” Kylian asked.

River chuckled. “No, it’s true.”

“At least they’ll be in the same country after they graduate,” Kylian said sadly.

River reached over and patted Kylian’s hand. “Paris is not that far away.”

It was. “I’ve asked Dean Muto and my senior advisor to help me secure a working visa and to find out if it is possible for me to open a little café right here in Sapporo. Milo said he would like to stay and go into business with me. But now that he’s involved with Vincent, maybe he might change his mind and go back to the United States to be near him.”

“So what if he does. You can always hire another person to help out.” River paused. “I’ve also spoken to Dean Muto to help me secure a working visa.”

Kylian gasped. “You want to stay in town?”

“Yes. It’s been home for the last four years,” River answered.

“But what would you do here? You can’t run for a political office.”

“I could teach.”

“Oh, that’s a wonderful idea. But what if they sent you to a different prefecture.”

“Stop worrying. Dean Muto said that there are several vacant teaching positions right here at Cupid Academy and at the elementary school. I can stay here and get my master’s degree.”

“What about your family?”

“I’m sure they will understand. As a congressman, my father is very busy. So is my mom. They will be happy with my decision, just as long as they know I’m safe and secured.”

“And under the delusion that you’re heterosexual.”

“About that. I haven’t been totally honest to you. They already know that I like guys. My father caught me kissing one of my male friends.”

“What happened?” Kylian asked.

“What do you think? He had a fit.”

“And sent you off to boarding school?”

“I was already in boarding school and had just come home for a visit. So, he didn’t put up a fuss when he heard I got accepted in Cupid Academy in Japan.”

“Oh,” Kylian said sadly.

“I don’t want to be around to be a constant reminder that I’m different,” River said.

“Will he come for your graduation?”

River shook his head. “I don’t think so.”

“Why not? It’s your big day.”

“I’ve been here for four years and he’s never come to any event, not even my freshman orientation.”

“Your parents didn’t bring you here?”

River shook his head. “No. My older brother escorted me to the airport in Washington and put me on a plane.”

How cold. Maybe River was right. It seems he didn’t have anything to gain if he left Japan.

“Don’t worry. I’ll be fine.
